Body Checking in Recreational Hockey
VIAHA Executive Committee has passed a resolution, effective for the 2011-2012 season, which eliminates bodychecking from all levels of recreational hockey. This does not affect our Peewee through Midget teams playing in competitive leagues. This decision is not one that has the support of the NMHA Board and the Nanaimo representative at the meeting spoke and voted against the resolution.
Nanaimo’s preferred position would have been the formation of both bodychecking and non-bodychecking leagues at the Bantam and Midget levels. As NMHA is a member of VIAHA, and is required to be a member of a District to be ‘in good standing’ with BC Hockey, we are obliged to abide by this resolution.
The motion passed at the VIAHA meeting Aug. 7th, 2011 reads:
M/S (Jan L/Ardie S) Effective immediately, there will be no body-checking in all levels of recreational hockey within VIAHA.
Voting by show of hands: Yes (10), No (7) CARRIED.
IMPORTANT: In view of this decision Nanaimo MHA Executive made the decision to OPEN try outs in the Bantam and Midget Competitive divisions, If you wish to have your player signed up for tryouts, which are scheduled for Aug. 27 & 28(goalies only) Aug. 29 – Sept. 1st(all players and goalies). Please come into the Nanaimo MHA office with payment of $60.00 try out fee. Deadline to register for tryouts will be Aug. 20th.
